If there were a reincarnation of Michelangelo, it would be none other than Kim Hanbin. This is not just because the South Korean artist sings about him in one of his most iconic songs but also because the entertainment world rarely witnesses a prodigy like Hanbin.
We spent two intense days with B.I, also known as Kim Hanbin, in Milan. Between a fashion photoshoot and the backstage of his show at Alcatraz, we had the chance to explore his many facets. In his private life, B.I reveal his 28 years through disarming purity and exemplary politeness. His personality stands in stark contrast to the clichés often associated with the rap and hip-hop world, too frequently tied to excess and the image of a doomed lifestyle.
B.I. is pure art. His show in Milan ignited the Alcatraz audience, delivering an explosive and intimate performance —a musical journey that deeply resonated with his fans. On stage, he is a magnetic performer; off stage, he is a thoughtful, self-aware young man in constant evolution.
We spoke with B.I in an exclusive interview for Panorama.it.
How does it feel to be back in Milan? What emotions do you associate with the city?
Last year, I was in Milan for just a few days, so I didn’t really have the chance to explore it deeply. This time, I stayed longer, did some sightseeing, and immersed myself in the unique energy of Northern Italy, which I truly appreciate.
You are often seen as a versatile artist. How do you think your music has evolved over time?
I wouldn’t necessarily call myself versatile, but I always try to challenge myself with new styles and experiments. I wouldn’t describe it as a linear progression but rather a constant exploration of new aspects of my creativity.
In Tasty, there’s a line that says: “Yeah your boyfriend is cool but he ain’t top tier, you should be with me.” What message were you trying to convey?
There’s no personal meaning behind that line. I wanted to add a cool and catchy touch to the track while staying true to its energetic and straightforward vibe. I also want to emphasize that the character described in the song is the exact opposite of who I am.
Where does the energy of Tasty come from?
Tasty was created to reflect the dynamism of my tour. I wanted a lively track with captivating choreography and an energetic sound. The process felt natural, without any specific inspiration.
How did the collaboration with Woosung come about? Can you share something about the creative process?
I’ve known Woosung for a couple of years. We’ve shared dinners and conversations that revealed a natural connection. When he asked me to collaborate, I immediately said yes. He gave me just three days to write my parts, and I worked on them with excitement and speed.
BTBT is considered one of your most iconic songs. How do you feel about its lasting impact?
I never imagined BTBT would become so successful. Knowing it’s still loved and danced to today is a great honor. It’s a song that, in some way, pushed me to believe more in my own potential.
How do you balance emotional openness with privacy in your music?
I don’t consciously calculate a balance between public and private. I write songs as if they were pages from a diary, sharing emotions, even the darkest ones. However, I try to put myself in the fans’ shoes so they can relate to my experiences.
You’ve talked about the challenges you’ve faced in your career. How have those experiences influenced your recent work?
Last year’s European tour was a pivotal moment for my personal and professional growth. It was my first time in Europe, and I had to face new challenges. Those experiences taught me a lot and prepared me to better tackle this new phase of my career.
How do you stay true to your artistic vision as the industry continues to evolve?
I don’t follow trends, nor do I feel compelled to. I prefer creating music that reflects my emotions and instincts at the moment, without compromises.
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
There are many artists I admire, but I prefer to leave room for unexpected and spontaneous collaborations.
How do you decide which style to adopt for a song?
I rely on instinct and emotion. I don’t follow a rigid technical process but let the melody and theme guide me.
Is there an album or song that holds a special place in your heart?
Every album and song is like a child to me. If I had to choose, I’d say my first album because it represents the beginning of my artistic journey.
What can we expect from your upcoming projects? Have you experimented with new genres or styles?
I’m currently working on my third album, but my ongoing tour with a DJ might lead to new collaborations and unexpected ideas. I’m always open to experimenting.
What is your vision for the future of your music?
I can’t predict the future, but I want to do everything I can to leave a mark with my music before embracing other responsibilities life might bring my way.
