The son of Scottish inventor John Dunlop, on the first bicycle to have pneumatic tyres. John Boyd Dunlop was born in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, and worked as a vet in Scotland and Ireland. He replaced the solid rubber tyres of his child's tricycle with an inflated rubber hose and, although the idea had already been patented by Robert William Thomson, Dunlop founded a business to produce his new pneumatic tyres and is credited with their invention.
